Notes

Watson was born in Edinburgh, but spent much of his working life in Italy. This is one of four pictures, each of Italian subjects, that he submitted to the Royal Academy from London addresses between 1843 and 1845. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street.
