Stephen Catterson Smith, The Elder P.R.H.A. (1806-1872) Portrait of a Young Lady, standing, three quarter length, her left arm resting upon a chair, a landscape in the distance Signed, indistinctly dated, possibly 1850 and inscribed Dublin, oil on panel, 45.5cm by 35cm Born in Yorkshire and studied at the Royal Academy Schools and in Paris, working in Londonderry 1839-1845. He moved to Dublin, became President of the RHA 1859-1866 and in 1868 Director of the National Gallery. He exhibited at the RHA, the RA and the British Institute. See illustration
