The Dome of the Rock was built by Caliph Abd al-Malik from 688-691 and was constructed over the rock where the prophet Muhammed ended his night journey to Jerusalem and ascended to heaven.

Stanley Inchbold studied under Sir Hubert von Herkomer and then exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1884. He travelled widely through the Holy Land and provided the illustrations for A.C. Inchbold's 1906 publication 'Under the Syrian Sun'.
