Lot 190: Stanislas Henri BenoŒt Darondeau (French, 1807-1841)

The return of the prodigal son signed and dated 'Stanislas Darondeau/1840' (lower left) oil on canvas 74 x 54 in. (188 x 137 cm.) NOTES Darondeau exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1827-1841 and submitted this work for the Prix de Rome of 1848. In this scene, he draws inspiration from the artistic traditions of the Italian Renaissance and contemporary Neapolitan life; a favoured subject for Romantic painters of the early Nineteenth Century.
