The present lot dates from 1906, an early but important phase in Spencer Frederick Gore's short but influential artistic life. Within a year Gore would be working alongside his friend Walter Sickert in the promotion and development of the Fitzroy Street Group – and would later become a founder and one of the key figures in the Camden Town Group.

Having first met Sickert in Dieppe in 1904, in a meeting 'justly regarded as momentous in the history of modern English painting ', (Anthony d'Offay exhibition catalogue, 1983, Spencer Frederick Gore 1878-1914, Richard Shone) Gore continued to develop his interest in French painting, particularly during the six months of 1906 when he borrowed Sickert's house at Neuville. Commenting on the years 1906-10, Richard Shone writes that, 'Gore's outlook is serene, undramatic, casually selective – any corner of the garden or quiet fenced walk would do (......) he is closest in his poetic realism to Pissarro...'.

In this work, even before the Yorkshire landscapes of 1907 instanced by Shone, can perhaps also be seen 'those yellow-greens, mauves and orange–ochres as half tones which give Gore his special position in the final years of Impressionism' .
