Lot 173: Spanish School of the 19th Century - Attired Native, Signed "Juan Peyró"

Item Overview

Description

Oil on canvas. This work, attributed to the Spanish School of the 19th century, essentially to Juan Peyró, depicts a character identified as an Indian in traditional attire, situated in an architectural environment of Islamic inspiration that contrasts with his clothing and attributes. The protagonist, standing in a contemplative attitude, wears a traditional yellow-toned outfit adorned with intricate embroidery and geometric motifs, enriched with decorative elements in red and blue tones. A headband and a white headdress reinforce his ethnic and ceremonial identity. In his right hand, he holds a curved object that could allude to a sword or a symbolic element, while his proud posture suggests authority or dignity.

The architectural background, with lobed arches and ornamental details evoking an Andalusian courtyard, gives the scene an exotic and theatrical dimension. The lush plants emerging in the background, combined with the warm tones and projected shadows, add depth and a picturesque touch. This setting, which appears to be a monumental or palatial space, contrasts with the central figure, highlighting her as a focal point of interest.

The color treatment is vibrant, with a rich palette that balances the decorative details of the clothing with the earthy tones of the surroundings. The brushstrokes are precise, especially in the depiction of the textiles and ornaments, revealing an intention to capture both the texture and the symbolic richness of the costume.

The work reflects the 19th century interest in Orientalism, an artistic movement that idealized and romanticized foreign cultures, particularly those of the East and America, from a European perspective. This painting, in addition to its artistic value, is a testimony to the fascination with cultural diversity and exoticism that characterized many Spanish artists of the time, such as Mariano Fortuny, who also explored similar themes in his work. Measurements: 55 x 43 cm. Inscription at the back "Juan Peyró lo pintó"
