Sokari Douglas Camp was born in the town of Buguma in 1958, located in the oil-rich Niger Delta in Southern Nigeria. She then traveled to London to pursue an arts education. Becoming a graduate of the Central School of Art and Design, and the Royal College of Art in London in 1986. The present lot is an early example of the sculptor's work. It is also significantly smaller than her usual body of work, as she normally welds metal together at a large scale. The sculptures of Sokari Douglas Camp have been exhibited around the world, and are included in the collections of the British Museum in London, the Smithsonian Museum of African Art in Washington, and the Setagaya Art Museum in Tokyo. The artist was awarded a CBE in 2005.
