Item Overview

Description

SOKARI DOUGLAS-CAMP (b.1958) RED AFRICAN & BLUE AFRICAN (PAIR) 2010 Steel drawing 22.5 x 22 cm. (10.5 x 10.7 in.) Artist's Statement I was looking at pictures of Aung San Suu Kyi, the burmese activist, and thinking of how to represent iconic women of colour. Flower in her hair and lines of radiance coming from her head. Red African/Blue African, beautiful girls with radiance in a continent that has strife. I tried to make something positive by focusing on the attire of women in Christian West Africa and Muslim West Africa. Both women are in the same situation, both have a crown of words radiating from their heads: Africa, Hope, Peace, Starvation, Famine, Rape. A spiral of words that are not positive but the images of the women are larger than the words. I am hopeful that there will be more positive words in the future.
