[SLEZER, John (d. 1714)]. Theatrum Scotiae, containing the Prospects of His Majesty's Castles and Palaces. London: D. Browne, J. Senex, A. Johnston [and others], 1718. 2° (356 x 254mm), title in red and black with enrgaved armorial, engraved dedication, folding engraved panorama of Edinburgh and 60 double-page engraved and etched plates, some mounted (panorama rehinged and repaired on verso, a few plates browned, occasional marginal soiling, one or two splits to folds). Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked in morocco gilt, inner hinges repaired, free endpapers creased). Provenance: William Gordon of Inver Gordon (bookplate) -- Andrew Carnegie (bookplate).

Lowndes calls for 58 plates in this edition, plus the panorama, though 59 is the more usual number. First published in 1693, Slezer's book was the earliest series of town prospects to be published in Britain. Lowndes VI, 2413.
