2 volumes, 8υo (225 x 148 mm). 18 chromo-lithographed plates, 6 woodcut plates, and 3 folding lithographed maps (one folding map loose) woodcut illustrations in the text (minor marginal staining). Contemporary green half calf, elaborately gilt (some light rubbing).

FIRST EDITION. "The official account of the first Swedish circumnavigation [...] prized for its fine color plates" (Hill). Illustrated are scenes and natives from South America and the Pacific Islands. The expedition was under the command of Captain Christian Adolf Virgin (1797-1870) and the author of the account was the expedition's astronomer. The circumnavigation lasted from November 1851 to July 1853 and visited the east and west coasts of South America and Pacific and Indian Ocean Islands. On board was Nils Johan Andersson, the first Darwinian botanist in Sweden, who published his own account and later published an important paper on the botany of the Galapagos.
