Description

Sir John Watson Gordon (1788-1864) Portrait of Colonel James Russell, three quarter length in military uniform Oil on canvas, 88.5cm by 67.5cm Colonel James Russell of Woodside, Stirlingshire of the 7th Hussars, afterwards Colonel of the Stirling Militia- b. 05.01.1783 and d. 24.12.1880. He married Mary Stirling of Kippendavie on 26.04.1808. Subject to VAT on the hammer price
In fully restored condition. Re-lined, cleaned and re-varnished. The background is somewhat thin and flat. There is re-touching and overpainting in the background, more isolated touches in the fair, hair and throughout his attire. Good thivk impasto remains within the face, jacket tassels, and the breast of the jacket with some fine cracquelure remaining in places.
