Sir John Moore had a distinguished military career and fought in the American War of Independence (1779-1783) and in Corsica in the French Revolutionary War (1794). He was fatally wounded during the last stages of the battle of Corunna when in command of the British troops in Spain. His patriotic last words were 'I hope the people of England will be satisfied. I hope my country will do me justice.' His funeral is commemorated in the poem The Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna by Charles Wolfe.
