NOTE

The sitter was the son of William Fleming, 5th Earl of Wigton, and his wife, Henrietta, daughter of Charles Seton, 2nd Earl of Dunfermline. He was sent to France for his education and remained a staunch Jacobite throughout his life. He married three times, firstly to Margaret, daughter of Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres. He married secondly Mary, daughter of William Keith, 8th Earl Marischal, and married as his third wife, Eupheme, daughter of George Lockhart of Carnwath, County Lanark.
