Artist or Maker

Notes

The Duke of Montrose was created a title in the peerage of Scotland in 1488. Following forfeiture, it was then bestowed anew in 1707 on James Graham, 4th Marquess of Montrose, becoming the 1st Duke of Montrose of the second creation.

Sir John Baptist de Medina, born in Brussels of a Spanish family, settled in Edinburgh in 1693/4 where he was immensely successful painting portraits of Scottish nobililty. He was knighted in Scotland in 1707.
