Sinibaldo Scorza was born in Genoa where he entered the studio of Giovanni Battista Paggi in 1604 and was later to replace his master. His paintings, especially those of animals and landscapes, found great demand among collectors of the time. Furthermore, he became the court painter to Carlo Emmanuele, Duke of Savoy, between 1619 and 1625. Here we have one of the artists' drawings of horses which he sometimes used as studies for his paintings and engravings. It is an example of the highly detailed pen-and-ink drawings of animals for which he is best known.
