Notes

The lush slopes of the Sabine mountains, the semicircular range that shelters the ancient town of Tivoli, would have been of great appeal to Simon Denis, whose plein air oil sketches were distinguished by the artist's ability to realistically capture the fleeting effects of the sun in nature. Another view of the Sabine mountains, taken from a different angle and higher vantage point, was sold at Christie's, New York, October 17 2006, lot 65.
