Shepherd (James Affleck, 1867-1946). Burstow Hunt puppies feeding from a bucket, black chalk and colour wash drawing, signed with initials, dated Xmas 1906, inscribed 'Burstow Puppies' to top right, and with additional caption below image 'Here's a health to you', 26.5 x 33 cm (10.5 x 13 ins), framed and glazed William James Affleck Shepherd was a keen huntsman who specialised in humorous drawings of animals. He worked with Alfred Bryan the cartoonist on Moonshine, and contributed to Strand Magaine, Punch, Sporting and Dramatic News, as well as illustrating a number of books, including Uncle Remus (1901) and The Jovial Puppies (1907). He lived in Charlwood, Surrey and Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
