SCHOLAR LEANING AGAINST A PINE TREE Hanging scroll, ink and colour on silk 181.2 x 117.5 cm. (71 1/3 x 46 1/4 in.) Signed: Wutang Sheng Mao One seal of the artist: Sheng Shi Zi Zhao Nine collectors' seals, including: Xiang Yuanbian (1525-1590): Mo Lin Mi Wan, Xiang Zi Jing Jia Zhen Cang, Xiang Yuan Bian Yin, Xiang Mo Lin Jian Shang Zhang, Zui Li Xiang Shi Shi Jia Bao Wan; and Mei Xuan Zhen Cang; Zhen Zhou Bian Shi Xiao Song Ge Kao Cang Shu Hua Zhi Yin; You Mei Shu Hua; one other illegible seal Note: Sheng Mao was a native of Lin'an and the son of Sheng Hong, who was himslef a painter. Sheng Mao's sobriquet name was Zizhao. He lived next door to Wu Zhen. Sheng was adept in landscapes, figures, and birds and flowers, having learnt from Chen Lin and later changing to develop his own style.
