NOTE

S. K. Zaryanko was among the leading portraitists of the third half of the 19th century. A student of Aleksei Venetsianov, Zaryanko was an academic and professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. Zaryanko painted the portraits of the Imperial family for the Romanov Gallery at the Winter Palace as well as individual portraits, family portraits, portraits of nobility, and of rich merchants. It is most likely that the present work pertains to the latter class.
