Seraphin Denécheau studied under Rude and Jean-Pierre David (David D'Angers). He exhibited on a regular basis at the Salon from 1859, and his Femme carréssant une chimère was noted at the Paris 1867 Exposition Universelle. An artist of portraits, mythological and allegorical groups, he had numerous commissions from the French State, the Musée du Louvre, the Opéra de Paris, the Gare du Nord, and a number of Parisian churches.
