Sengai was from Mino province. He studied for 13 years with the Zen master Gessen zenji from whom, it is belived, he learned paintings. HE later became the 123 (rd) abbot (1790-1811) in Shofuku-ji in Hakata but he was known with friendly unpretentious personality.
