Selma McCormack (b.1943) LETTERS HOME, 2008 signed and dated lower centre; inscribed with title on reverse acrylic on card 69 by 48cm., 27 by 19in. Selma McCormack, painter and sculptor, manoeuvres through both her disciplines with equal enthusiasm adding to each her own distinctive style which she has been developing since she began exhibiting in the 1980s. Her sculptural work tends to be figurative in nature, bronze being her medium of choice. Her paintings, although more abstract, retain a very comprehensible form of expression. Now a full-time artist McCormack divides her time between Spiddal and Dublin. On her paintings, Fred Johnston, author, poet and critic, has commented, "These paintings have a deep sensitivity suggesting themes beyond the obvious. This is art in motion and can at times be simultaneously formidable and comforting." Also see lot 162.
