Description

Sean Crampton (1918-1999) Judith Bronze Signed with monogram SC and numbered 1of 10 variegated dark green patination 61cm.; 24ins high Shown at the Royal academy summer exhibition 1994. Judith is the fourth book of the Old Testament. The widow Judith volunteers to deliver the Israelites from siege by the Assyrians. She enters the enemy camp pretending to be an informer against her people. The Assyrian general Holofernes is captivated by her beauty and invites her to a banquet in his tent. At the banquet the general becomes intoxicated and falls asleep Judith seizes a sword and beheads him shown in this piece held behind her back. She returns to her people with the head wrapped in a sack. This restores their faith in God so they rise up to attack the Assyrians.
