Item Overview

Description

This impressive large folio engraving is from Henry Sartain. It is a very scarce print published in Philadelphia in 1863. The engraving was drawn and published by Henry Sartain. He came from an artistic family in Philadelphia. He focused on the monumental quality of the building, and illustrated people, horses, and dogs around the building to give a feel for the energy and enthusiasm surrounding the construction of this important goverment building. Lincoln insisted on the continued construction of the building into the Civil War as the expansion would be necessary to accomodate the new states that would soon be added to the Union. When this was engraved, the new dome was not completed and is thus shown inaccurately proportioned.
