Inscribed and signed by the author/illustrator with his paw-print mark on the half-title page: "To Mrs. Helen Crane. This story of a noble dog - that I knew well in a brief spell - But where history is bound to last you over(?) 'Santana(printed)' The noblest Dog in France - The Saviour of Verdun - With best wishes of the author, Ernest Thompson Seton [paw-print drawing], 30 May, 1945."
