Notes

The first is a George II design for a chimney-piece with gothic pillars and fret-arcaded frieze enriched with foliage and corresponds to the architecture of an 'umbrello' garden-seat in B. & T. Langley's, Ancient Architecture Restored, 1742 (pl.51). The latter also included a Chimney-Piece pattern with gothic pointed arch (pl.41).
The second design is for a chimney-piece with pointed and foliated arch and also relates to a pattern in B. & T. Langley's, Ancient Architecture Restored, 1742 (pl. 42).
Two chimney-pieces likely to have originated from the same source, are illustrated in P. Fuhring, Drawings for Architecture and Ornament, 1989, vol. 1, nos. 427 and 428.
