Literature

London and its Environs Described, published by Dodsley, 1761, vol. II, IV & V (the second ill. opp. p. 262).

Marlborough House, vol. IV, p. 262-263 - 'Marlborough House, situated behind the houses of Pall Mall, is a very large brick edifice, ornamented with stone, and built in a peculiar taste'.

The Custom House, vol. II, p. 213 - 'Though we cannot call this a very beautiful building, yet from its great utility, and the conspicuous place in which it stands, we thought a representation of it by a print could not be omitted'. (On this site since Queen Elizabeth I - rebuilt after 1666 Great Fire. Another fire during the reign of Charles II, 1718 - rebuilt.)

Northumberland House, vol. V, p. 50-59 - 'One of the largest and most magnificent houses in London'. (Built during the reign of James I by Henry Howard, Earl of Northumberland - passed to the Earl of Suffolk, 1642).
