Description

Samuel "Sam" Thal (American, New York, 1903 - 1964), "The Launching," etching on paper, c. 1930s/40s, titled in pencil at lower left and signed at lower right, measures 8.75 x 11.75 inches to the plate edge, 15.25 x 17.25 inches framed, label verso from the "W. W. Gallery" in Union, New Jersey. CONDITION: Good, light matt burn, frame with scuffs. Although primarily known for his drypoint etchings, Sam Thal was also an accomplished painter, illustrator, architectural sculptor and art educator. Born of Russian immigrant parents in New York City in 1903, Thal spent his childhood in Hadlyme, Connecticut, where his parents owned a large farm and poultry processing plant. He studied at the National Academy of Design (beginning at age twelve), for three years of sculpture classes at the Beaux Arts Academy and two years of study at the Art Students League.
