Profile Portrait Miniature of a Young Man, Joseph Ropes. Artist and sitter identified in penciled inscriptions on verso and on backing paper. Watercolor on paperboard heightened with gum arabic, 3 3/4 x 3 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Minor toning, minute paint losses on gum arabic application.

Portrait is not laid down. A superfluous pencil inscription "Price" which may be confused with an artist signature is at l.l. edge., and erasure of "$1.50" at l.r.
