Cornice coeva in legno intagliato e dorato
Firmato S. J. Clark in basso a sinistra. Antico cartiglio col nome di un corniciaio di Nottingham (Smith) sul retro.
Provenienza: Collezione privata, Verona.

Samuel James Clark fu il primo figlio del pittore di animali James Clark, dal quale imparò a dipingere. Nello stato di famiglia del 1861 risulta già attivo come "animal painter".
Dal 1863 visse a Londra con la giovane moglie Mary spostandosi da Islington a Chelsea, Hampstead, Balham, Streatham and Brixton fino a stabilirsi a Islington intorno al 1880.
Alla fine degli anni 90, Samuel abbandonò Mary e si trasferì a Tottenham con la nuova moglie, divenuta anch'essa pittrice. Come molti altri membri della sua famiglia, non pare che Samuel abbia mai esposto i suoi quadri nelle maggiori gallerie e i suoi dipinti portano spesso i timbri e i cartigli di corniciai e mercanti d'arte, specialmente Arthur Rayner. Dal 1905 vendette i suoi dipinti tramite la London Fine Art Company, una casa d'aste di proprietà di James Lawrence Castiglione che divenne suo amico e mecenate.
I suoi soggetti favoriti sono scene di fattoria e paesaggi di campagne inglesi: e specialmente cavalli, raffigurati al lavoro o in riposo: in essi si vede il chiaro influsso della pittura di J. F. Herring.
Utilizzò una grande varietà di differenti firme, incluse S Clark, S J Clark (spesso con la J che scende attraverso la S), Saml. J Clark e S Jas. Clark.
