Item Overview

Description

This detailed engraving comes from Thomas Salmon's The Universal Traveller: Or, a Compleat Description of the Nations of the World. The work was published in Londong by Richard Baldwin in 1759.

Salmon's work was a cultural physical geography of Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It featured views from some of the preceeding historic travel works including many after De Bry.

Thomas Salmon was mostly self-educated English historian who also lived in both the East and West Indies. He sailed with Lord Anson on his 1740-1744 circumnavigation. He published numerous works in world gazetteers, geographical grammars and histories, and travel narratives.
