Salla Tykkä was born in Helsinki in 1973 and between 1995 and 2003 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there, where she first followed photography and subsequently started working with film and video. Salla Tykkä's films are striking because of the concise nature of the short stories and the precise use of image, music and sound. Her films fascinate with their beauty but their complexity simultaneously inhibits bringing an unequivocal message. Her film installations have recently received much critical acclaim in Europe. With Lasso from 2001, she attracted international attention at the Venice Biennial. Latest solo exhibitions were shown at the City Gallery Wellington, Wellington (2007); S.M.A.K., Gent, 2006; Gallery Yvonne Lambert, 2006; The Institute of Visual Arts, Milwaukee, 2003; Kunsthalle Bern, Bern, 2002. She has participated in numerous group shows at amongst others: Galleria Civica di Modena, 2007; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2006 and Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, 2005. Tykkä's films have been shown at international film festivals like: 36th International Film Festival Rotterdam, Rotterdam, 2007; 21st Brest European Short Film Festival, Brest, 2006; Tribeca Film Festival, New York, 2003; International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Oberhausen, 2003 and 2002 etc. Her solo Lucid Dreams was on view at de Appel in 2006.
