Notes

Though his nickname 'il Genovesino' points to his Genoese origins, Luigi Miradori was in fact trained in the Milanese tradition of Morazzone, Tanzio da Varallo and Francesco del Cairo. He is first documented in Genoa in 1630, subsequently traveling through Piacenza and Rome before settling in Cremona around 1640. There he produced numerous works for the prominent religious orders, as well as for prominent secular patrons such as Don Alvaro de Quiñones, Cremona's Spanish governor, who sent several of Miradori's paintings to the royal court in Spain. Indeed, certain aspects of his style recall the Spanish artists whose works were well known in Lombardy, where the Habsburgs ruled. The subtle use of spotlit effects in the present work are a response to Caravaggism, while the lively, active figures populating small scenes such as the present work are a hallmark of the artist.

We are grateful to Dr. Mina Gregori for confirming the attribution to Miradori on the basis of photographs (private communication, 13 February 2008).
