Saburosuke Okada (Japanese 1869-1939) Figures in a Mountain Landscape watercolour on board, signed 48x65cm In 1897 Okada became the first Japanese artist to receive government sponsorship to travel overseas and to learn western painting techniques. He spent five years in Paris studying under Raphael Collin. Later becoming Professor at Tokyo Art School, a member of the Imperial Art Academy and was awarded The Order of Cultural Merit and The Order of the Sacred Treasure
