RUTH MONRO AUGUR (American, 1886-1967) Spanish Dancer Oil on canvas laid on board 41-1/2 x 27-1/2 inches (105.4 x 69.9 cm) Signed lower right: Augur Ruth Monro Auger studied under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri at the New York School of Art in 1905. She was best known as a landscape, portrait, and genre painter. She also worked as a muralist and graphic designer. Spanish Dancer is a beautiful and dramatic painting. It is especially desirable as an example of a work by an early female Texas painter, who was a contemporary of Julian Onderdonk and even studied with several of his teachers.
