Description

RUDULPH EVANS (1878-1960) BUST OF EDGAR ALLAN POE Measurements: height: 17in. Alternate Measurements: (43.2 cm) inscribed R. Evans Sc with the Roman Bronze Works N.Y. foundry mark bronze, dark greenish patina Provenance: Estate of the artist Acquired by the present owner from the above, early 1980s Literature and References: Clifford Krainik, "The 'Ultima Thule' Bust of Poe by Rudulph Evans," The Poe Messenger, Richmond, Virginia, Summer 1983, pp. 7-8, illustrated p. 6 Note: The present work is based on the well-known daguerreotype image of Edgar Allan Poe known as the "Ultima Thule" portrait. Clifford Krainik writes, "It was in 1909, the centennial year of Poe's birth, that Rudulph Evans, then a struggling young artist, received a commission to sculpture a life-size bronze bust of Edgar Allan Poe. Evans had recently returned to America from his studies in Paris where he had been instructed by Rodin and Saint-Gaudens. The request for the bust of Poe came from Patrick Valentine, a wealthy art collector from Chicago who was the son-in-law and partner of Philip Armour. ' 'Evans interpreted the 'Ultima Thule' portrait in a direct and classical manner. 'The signed edition was limited to two busts, one received by Mr. Valentine, the other [the present work] retained by the artist' (The Poe Messenger, Richmond, Virginia, Poe Museum, Summer 1983, pp. 7-8). Evans is best known for his heroic bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson enshrined in the Jefferson Memorial, Washington, D.C.. Other noted works include a full length rendering of Robert E. Lee in the Virginia State Capitol, busts of Longfellow, Whittier, Bancroft and Cleveland in the Hall of Fame, N.Y., and two life-size bronze statues in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, Washington, D.C.. A copy of the Summer 1983 edition of The Poe Messenger will accompany this lot.
