Ruairi Rodgers (b.1956) NEW TOWN, TORY signed lower right; inscribed lower left; original exhibition label on reverse oil on board 64 by 121cm., 25 by 47.5in. Provenance: Octagon Gallery, Belfast; Private collection, Belfast Ruairi Rodgers is one of the younger generation of Tory Island artists. Encouraged to paint by the late Derek Hill, he turned down an opportunity to go to art school, training instead as a carpenter. Jim Hunter (author of Tory Island and its artists, University of Ulster, 2003) has noted this background in carpentry lends a distinctive precision to Rodgers' drawing (op. cit., p. 17).
