Description

* Rowlandson (Thomas). ÔPeter's Pension', n.d. c.1787, original pencil, ink and watercolour drawing on laid, signed ÔGilray' (sic) in lower left corner, slight staining and dust soiling, 190 x 270mm (7.5 x 10.5 inches) Peter Pindar was the pseudonym of A Cornish doctor called John Wolcot (1738-1819). He was infamous for his satirical poems which attacked prominent men in society including King George III. The king tried to stifle Wolcot by offering him an annual ÔpensionÔ if he desisted from writing his satirical verse. Wolcot declined and continued to be a thorn in the establishments side until his death. Joseph Grego, Rowlandson the Caricaturist, vol.1 page 206-8. Illustrated on page 207. (1)
