Rosina Emmet Sherwood (American, 1854-1948), pair of portraits, "Frederick Lippitt (1916-2005)" and "Mary Ann Lippitt (1918-2006)", 1920, pastel on paper, both initialed "R.E.S" and dated lower right and left respectively, latter with D.B. Butler & Co., Madison Avenue, New York label en verso, sight 22 3/4 in. x 19 1/4 in., in matching period giltwood frames.
PLEASE NOTE: Provenance: Acquired by the present owner from the estates of the sitters. Note: This winsome pair of portraits depicts siblings from a distinguished Rhode Island family with Colonial origins, the son and daughter U.S. Senator Henry F. Lippitt and Lucy Hayes Herron Lippitt and grandchildren to Rhode Island Governor Charles Warren Lippitt. Fredrick Lippitt was an anti-corruption candidate for mayor of Providence and Minority Leader in the Rhode Island House of Representatives in the 1970s. A member of a prominent New York family including artists Lydia Field Emmet and Ellen Emmet Rand, Rosina Emmet Sherwood studied under William Merritt Chase in New York and with Tony Robert-Fleury at the Academie Julian. The mother of five children, Sherwood often used her own family as subjects.
