One of the most famous images in American history is Rosenthal''s flag raising over Mt. Suribachi, which is memorialized in a Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, D.C. The battle on the island of Iwo Jima was one of the bloodiest of World War II, with over 25,000 casualties and 6,000 Marines killed in action.
