Item Overview

Description

*Rosalie de Meric (1916-1999) 'DEPARTURE OF BIRDS' Signed and dated 1954 l.r., oil on board 76 x 60.5cm Rosalie De Meric was born in Dorset. As a child, she met Francis Bacon with whom she developed a life-long friendship. She married the poet, Thomas Blackburn, soon after the end of the Second World War, and, together with Bacon, the three of them became infamous, influencing each other's work greatly. As a result, De Meric, who had been a landscape painter, began to contribute more to abstract expressionism during the 1950s and 1960s, but later she returned to landscape painting when she settled in Suffolk in the 1980s.
