CATALOGUE NOTE

Rong Rong's photo of demolished traditional houses best captures the anxiety and silence adrift in these modern ruins. Such sensitivity to ruins also best attests to his contemporary: to his generation of artists who emerged in the early to mid-90's. the 1960s and 70s were history, and they were finally able to bid farewell to the Culture Revolution and its visual and mental baggage. Rong Rong's pictures of ruined houses respond to China's current transformation, not to history and collective memory.
