Robert Tonge (1823-1856) ''Brotherwater and Kirkstone Pass from Haws'' Signed and dated 1846, inscribed verso, oil on board, 37cm by 47cm Provenance: Grindley & Palmer, 75 Church Street, Liverpool Robert Tonge was the most influential landscapist of the Liverpool School at the beginning of the Pre-Raphaelite era, and it was Tonge who was instrumental in making William Davis take to landscape. In the Pre-Raphaelite tradition he worked usually out of doors in both oils and watercolours, often finishing his work on the spot. He frequently used a low horizon in his compositions to allow for his skill and enjoyment of painting skies.
