Présenté sur une feuille d’album, décoré d’un encadrement de papier découpé, attribué en bas à droite, titré en bas au centre.
Le titre se poursuit : « … bâti par le Général Martin (de Lyon), qui y fut inhumé dans l’année 1828. »

Robert Orr était écuyer (esquire), vraisemblablement d’une famille d’importants négociants en indigo, installé à Fort Gloster, dans la banlieue de Calcutta, où il est décédé le 16 octobre 1842, âgé de 37 ans, ainsi que le précise l’Asiatic Journal and Monthly Register for British and Foreign India, China and Australasia (Vol. XXXIX, Septembre-Décembre 1842, p.431).

Quelques années plus tôt, un homonyme, vraisemblablement son père, est cité comme plaignant dans une affaire de vol d’indigo, commis à Sasni (Uttar-Pradesh) par un certain Raja Pahup Singh. Ayant demandé l’intervention d’Almas Ali Khan, seigneur local sis à Lucknow, et mécontent d’être débouté, il fait intervenir le général français Pierre Cuillier-Perron (1755-1834).

Le « Général Martin (de Lyon) » est Claude Martin (1735-1800), célèbre aventurier, soldat de la Compagnie française des Indes orientales, puis de la Compagnie anglaise des Indes orientales. Il connaissait la famille Orr, et dans sa correspondance publiée, il cite Robert (le père) et se plaint de l’importante dette de 40.000 roupies qu’il ne s’empresse guère de rembourser.

Martin, après avoir gravi tous les échelons hiérarchiques de la Compagnie Anglaises des Indes Orientales constitue la plus importante fortune amassée par un Européen en Inde. Découragé de rentrer en France à cause de la Révolution, il se fait bâtir un palais, Constantia, nommé d'après sa devise Labore et Constantia. Le palais, bien que largement achevé en 1795, ne sera pas complètement terminé à son décès. Il existe toujours et abrite le La Martinière College, aujourd’hui un des établissements éducatifs les plus prestigieux d’Inde. Il abrite le mausolée de Martin, le plus grand monument funéraire européen en Inde, que l'historien William Dalrymple décrit comme « la réponse de la Compagnie des Indes orientales au Taj Mahal ». Le testament de Martin informait de son souhait de fonder, avec le restant de ses biens, cinq écoles, qui virent toutes le jour et qui existent encore : deux à Lucknow, deux à Calcutta et une à Lyon.
Constantia fut utilisé comme quartier-général pour l’état-major des révoltés Cipayes, en 1857 (appelée Indian Rebellion of 1857).

Notre dessin est une des vues les plus anciennes de ce Palais, véritable joyau de l’architecture coloniale en Inde.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
