The etching made after the present lot appeared as subject no. 4, Plate 89 of Volume 2 of Selby's Illustrations of British Ornithology (published 1819-34). 227 original drawings from the work survived and were sold at the Martin sale in 1989. The title of this lot and the previous one is taken from the etched plate. Mitford was Selby's brother-in-law and provided 55 of the drawings for the publication.
