Notes

In 1927, Bryn Mawr student Katharine Hepburn met Bob McKnight at a Yale dance. Just two years later, in 1929, McKnight was awarded the Prix de Rome as one of the top young sculptors in the United States, which provided the funding to for him to study in Rome and Paris for the next three years. Lifelong friends, Miss Hepburn posed for McKnight on numerous occasions, resulting in the creation of this example and lot 116, as well as lot 233, two bronze figures of Miss Hepburn, gifts from McKnight.
