Item Overview

Description

oil on canvas, signed and dated at lower right "Harvey '64," retaining a paper exhibition label on the verso with artist's name, title, and indicating that it was Painting of the Year in 1966; in the original gilt wood frame. Robert Martin Harvey was born in Lexington, NC. He was raised by his grandmother during the Depression and cites his exposure to her old photographs as the basis for his later series, "Family Album." Harvey recieved his formal training at the Ringling Art School in Sarasota, the Art Students League in NYC, and the San Francisco Art Institute. He also studied under Louis Ribak in Taos, NM. Harvey was particularly proud of this painting, which won the 1964 Art Across America Painting of the Year award. However, his work was well-respected and exhibited throughout the country including the North Carolina Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Art in Richmond, and many other locations. Harvey moved to Spain in 1971 where he still paints and exhibits in European museums and galleries.
