Robert Griffier was the son of Jan Griffier. Both of them painted primarily fantastic Rhine landscapes. Like his father he was a follower of Hermann Saftleven. The present painting is an exceptionally beautiful and rare large-scale composition of a Rhine landscape. Robert Griffier lived in Amsterdam for many years, but later he returned to England, where he died.
