With Clement Greenberg's visit to Toronto in the late 1950's, Canadian Ab-Ex artists would start to strongly feel the influences of their New York contemporaries. Enroute is a prime example of the Hedrick's unstructured abstraction, where large areas of aggressive brushwork push the allover design past the edges of the canvas giving the painting the appearance of no beginning or end.

The early 60's saw the rise of abstraction in Toronto, and art dealer Dorothy Cameron was at the forefront of the movement. Originally called the Here and Now Gallery it became The Dorothy Cameron Gallery in 1962 and the following year would see Hedrick have the first of a number of one man shows there.
