PROVENANCE:
Purchased from an Aberdeen Club circa 1980.

This picture bears strong comparison to Brough's Spanish Shawl (untraced, but illustrated in the Art Journal, 1905).

Aberdonian Brough was Peploe's closest friend during their student days, a brilliant talent with whom Peploe shared rooms in Paris in 1894. Brough was tragically killed in a railway accident aged 33.
